The Times' Hugo Rifkind...Mrs Right
The oddest thing about Sarah Palin, now that I'm up to speed, isn't
the woman herself, but the reaction to her. The Republicans have made
a goddess out of her already. It is as if they were waiting for one.I was reading Ferdinand Mount's autobiography Cold Cream on holiday,
and his recollections of Margaret Thatcher reminded me of just how
gooey the Right is prepared to go over the right kind of unobtainable
woman. It's not just worship, it's a weird sort of sexy worship. Alan
Hollinghurst nails it in The Line of Beauty. ...

Specialists give their views on Sarah Palin.
to say on this week's themes (it seems): feminism (and sexism), and Sarah Palin.
Hey, looks like I've got my finger on the pulse.
But I am rather disappointed that the Jon Stewart (or Colbert) people have
not been in touch to discuss my wonderfully wild "what-if" of Obama picking
a fellow African-American running mate!

Can you believe it?
It was a mere three years ago that YouTube streamed its first video, forever
changing the way we share experiences with people regardless of time and
distance.
Alice Miles of The Times (of London) writes an interesting column about
Sarah Palin.
I have to say I do not understand this whole business of feminism. So
Sarah Palin can handle childcare, hunt, as well govern Alaska. She
takes McCain shopping for a cheerleader outfit for her daughter. She
puts down her blackberry to pick up the breast pump. Praise be to
her! Why is that something special? Why do we write about it so much?
Why do women cheer and high-five when they hear such stories of
girl-power?
It seems women really did believe that stuff they were told in the
past that they are no good for anything but taking care of children
and cooking, they cannot believe it when they discover they can do
more. Come on! Men said these things because they were frightened of
losing the upper hand, they did not really believe that. Men have
mothers and sisters whom they adore and respect, and deep down they
knew they were equally as capable as they were. It is just that they
could not imagine themselves coming home to no dinner and a wife
who's out working late - what will my buddies say? But now men have
gotten over that - all my buddies are the same.
Yet still, women persevere with this business of "I am as good as
you". They look for perceived slight or insult in the tiniest of
behaviours coming from men. They still believe that to make it to
CEO, PM, or President, they have to work doubly harder. They think
there's an old boys network. They think men sit behind closed doors
and make belittling jokes about them: "all they have to do is stay
home, cook a nice dinner, and doll-up, that's all we ask of them.
HAHAHAHAHA."
Whatever Sarah Palin has succeeded in doing, it is a tribute to her
personality, not her gender. Obama's rise is not a tribute to his
race, it is a tribute to his own personal abilities and hard work.
I am particularly impressed with whoever coined - within minutes of Palin's nomination - the abbreviation VPILF.
Now when VP Palin (it is possible!) goes around world capitals doing courtesy visits and attending funerals (that's pretty much what VP's do, Sarah), the enemies of the USA will be confused. They'll be burning flags, chanting and yelling: "Death to America, Death to America, F* America, oh, damn, ... that's actually not a bad idea."
Am I pushing it too far?
